Coffee & Content: Building Creative Projects Brick by Brick

Coffee & Content: Building Creative Projects Brick by Brick

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!
Have you had a creative weekend so far? Whether you’ve been writing, filming, editing, or simply dreaming up your next big idea, I’ve got some inspiring content to fuel your passion and keep you moving forward. So grab your coffee, and let’s dive in.
This week’s featured video comes from Vanity Fair: How EJAE and Mark Sonnenblick Created “Golden” From KPop Demon Hunters. EJAE and Mark take us through a rare, intimate look inside their creative process as they unveil how they worked with THEBLACKLABEL to craft the groundbreaking original song “Golden” for the smash hit Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters. From the intricate production layers to EJAE’s delicate yet powerful vocal delivery, they dissect every decision that brought this stunning track to life.
The result? A song that transcended its film — “Golden” (by the movie’s fictional group HUNTR/X) topped the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks, becoming both a cinematic and cultural moment. For any storyteller, composer, or filmmaker, this raises a fascinating question: how do you create something that not only serves the story but also connects with audiences in the real world? It’s the kind of alchemy that happens when art and authenticity meet. When each creative choice becomes a brick in something much bigger.
And that brings me to something I said recently during a Stage 32 Writer’s Room Happy Hour Q&A. When you’re building a project, a film, a series, a stage production, a short, a song — you have to look at it brick by brick. You’ve got one brick: your story. Another brick: your collaborators. Another: your tone, your visuals, your audience. Piece by piece, you start stacking those bricks, and suddenly the vision begins to take shape.
Each brick matters. Each brick attracts the next. When you show people what you’re building: the structure, the intention, the passion, they’ll want to become part of it. That’s how momentum builds. But remember: everyone you want to involve has their own projects, their own priorities, and their own opportunities. So what makes you stand out? It’s not just your story, it’s you. You are one of the bricks.
When someone listens to 15 pitches, what makes yours memorable isn’t just the logline; it’s your energy, your openness, and your ability to collaborate. Film and TV development can be a four- or five-year journey. People want to know they can work with you for the long haul, that you’re someone who listens, evolves, and brings good energy to the process. So as you build your creative path brick by brick, remember: it’s not about doing everything at once. It’s about staying intentional, persistent, and open, and trusting that the right people will recognize the structure you’re building and want to be part of it.
What “bricks” are you building right now in your own creative journey? Are you developing something piece by piece — and what’s the next brick you plan to add this week? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
