Coffee & Content: The Tools, Routines, and Relationships That Drive Creative Success

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? Whether you’ve been writing, filming, editing, or simply dreaming up your next big idea, I’ve got some inspiring content to fuel your passion and keep you moving forward. So grab your coffee, and let’s dive in.

Let’s start with this insightful roundtable by Panavision, where a group of world-class DPs share the tools, routines, and instincts they rely on throughout the filmmaking process. From essential items like viewfinders, light meters, and (yes) coffee, to personal rituals and creative habits, they reflect on how they prepare for a shoot, and how they know when a shot is ready to go. Blending thoughtful insights with honest moments of humor, this video offers a look into the rhythm and mindset of working cinematographers as they navigate prep, performance, and their pursuit of the perfect image.

The Directors of Photography and filmmakers featured in this roundtable include Shelly Johnson ASC (Captain America: The First Avenger), Jonathan Sela ASC (John Wick), Autumn Durald Arkapaw ASC (Loki, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Phedon Papamichael ASC GSC (Walk The Line, Ford v Ferrari), Rodrigo Prieto ASC AMC (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Irishman), Mandy Walker AM ASC ACS (Elvis, Mulan), and several other acclaimed cinematographer.

During my last Stage 32 Ask Me Anything event, a member asked me: “How do you vet the executives you bring on Stage 32?”

The truth is, we turn away more executives than you might imagine. If they’re not in a position to genuinely help people, or if they don’t actually have the ability to get things done, they don’t make the cut. We only bring on executives and reps who are actively looking for material, who have access to financing or packaging, or who are truly looking to expand their client roster. We want you to know that when you interact with an executive on Stage 32, you’re getting feedback and opportunity from someone who can actually move the needle.

But here’s the other side of it: the onus is on you. You need to come in with a project that’s undeniable and make sure you’re putting yourself in front of the right people. That means doing your research on executives and their mandates, paying attention to which genres and budget ranges are moving in today’s market, and making it a habit to read the trades: Deadline, Hollywood Reporter, Variety every single day. We’ll continue to bring opportunities to you, but it’s up to you to position yourself to win.

And don’t forget, you’re not in this alone. Our Success Team is here to help. If you email them at Success@Stage32.com, they’ll offer curated advice on which executives, resources, and opportunities might be the best fit for you. The more detail you share about your projects, your goals, and the kind of partners you’re hoping to meet, the more specific and actionable their guidance can be.

Now, I want to hear from you:

What’s one ritual or habit that helps you prepare for your creative work? And on the business side, what’s one step you’ve taken recently to better position yourself for success in this industry?

As always, we love sharing inspiration, tools, and insights that help fuel your creative fire. Know someone who would love this content? Share it with them.
