Happy Tuesday, Creative Army!

Every November, the entire global film industry converges for The American Film Market (AFM) — the premier film acquisition, development, and networking event where more than $1 Billion in distribution and film financing deals are closed each year on completed films and those in every stage of development.

More business-oriented than any other motion picture event, AFM is where thousands of professionals from all corners of the industry come together to develop, showcase, discover, finance, and license 1000s of independent films destined for global audiences. AFM is the only sales market produced by the Independents, for the Independents.

As the official education partner of The American Film Market, Stage 32 is proud to continue empowering filmmakers, producers, and storytellers worldwide.

This year, every AFM badge holder will receive a free Stage 32 individual certification and webinar, giving you direct access to world-class industry education.

What’s New for 2025

This year’s AFM will be particularly special — it’s back in Los Angeles and in a brand-new location: The Fairmont Century Plaza!

The 2025 American Film Market officially kicks off on November 11th and runs through November 16th. It’s the ultimate destination to find partners, pitch your projects, and make deals that move your career forward — if you have a plan.

Let’s walk through a few key steps that can help you maximize your time and success at the market:

STEP 1: Do Your Homework – Create a List of Target Companies

Hundreds of production, sales, and distribution companies will have offices at AFM — but not all will be right for your project. Focus your time and effort on the companies best suited for your film’s genre, budget, and audience.

Start by exploring The Film Catalogue about a month before the market. Most AFM companies list their projects, staff, and contact information there. Badge holders can also use Cinando (included free for one year with your AFM badge) to research companies and make connections.

A good target list includes 30–40 companies. Less than 10? Too narrow. Over 100? Too broad. Hone in on the companies most aligned with your project’s goals.

STEP 2: Identify the Right Executives

For each target company, identify the key executives — especially those handling acquisitions, development, or production. Read the trades (Variety, THR, Deadline, Screen International) and browse company websites to find the right people.

Never walk into an office or approach a booth unprepared. Know who you’re speaking with and why your project aligns with their goals.

STEP 3: Start Scheduling Meetings

Most companies begin scheduling their meetings a few weeks before AFM. Reach out via a short, personalized email, and follow up a few days later.

Your meeting request is your first pitch.

DO tell them how they’ll benefit from taking on your project.

DON’T lead with what you need — lead with what value you bring.

This is how you stand out from the crowd.
