Happy Tuesday, Creative Army!

It’s that time of year again — the time when the business of film truly comes to life. Today marks the start of the 2025 American Film Market (AFM), and I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate what this event represents — not just for filmmakers, screenwriters, and producers around the world, but for Stage 32 as a community.

This year is extra special for us because it marks Stage 32’s 10th year as the official Education Partner of AFM.

That’s a decade of empowering filmmakers to not just dream about getting their films made, but to actually learn how to do it. A decade of connecting creatives with the industry professionals, buyers, and decision-makers who can make those dreams a reality. A decade of standing side by side with the AFM team, helping educate and elevate storytellers from all over the world.

When we first partnered with AFM, our goal was simple: to make sure every creative walking into that market had access to the education, resources, and connections they needed to succeed. Ten years later, that mission hasn’t changed, it’s only grown stronger.

My AFM Panel:

Low Budget, Big Vision — Strategies for Independent Filmmakers

If you’re attending AFM, make sure to join me for this incredible session:

Saturday, November 15th | 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Panelists:

  • Richard “RB” Botto – CEO, Stage 32
  • Chris Gore – Publisher, Film Threat
  • Tom Malloy – Producer & President, Glass House Distribution
  • Paul Bales – COO, The Asylum
  • Martine Melloul – Producer, Kali Pictures

This is going to be a powerhouse discussion for indie filmmakers who want to bring their stories to life with limited resources but unlimited passion. We’ll be talking about how to think strategically, creatively, and collaboratively to make the most of your budget and your team.

If you’ve ever wondered how to stretch every dollar, attract the right partners, and stay true to your vision, this panel is for you.

Don’t forget to add it to your AFM schedule!

The Business of Film Comes to Life

Every November, AFM becomes the heartbeat of the global film industry. It’s where the next great films are discovered, developed, and sold. Where billions of dollars in deals are made. And where creatives who show up prepared can completely change the trajectory of their careers.

As a filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter, walking into AFM with the right mindset — and a plan — can make all the difference. It’s not just about showing up; it’s about knowing what you want, who you want to meet, and how to position your project so it gets noticed.

That’s why I’m so proud that every AFM badge holder this year will receive a free Stage 32 individual certification and webinar, giving you direct access to world-class industry education and practical insights to help you navigate the Market strategically.

Back in Los Angeles — and in a New Home

After a year away, AFM is back in Los Angeles and in a brand-new location: The Fairmont Century Plaza!

From November 11th to November 16th, the Fairmont will be buzzing with producers, distributors, executives, and filmmakers from all over the world. It’s the ultimate destination to find partners, pitch your projects, and make the kind of meaningful connections that move your career forward.

This is where the industry meets opportunity — and you want to be part of it.

Can’t Make It to AFM This Year?

If you can’t be in Los Angeles this week, you can still keep up with all the action. Be diligent about reading the trades — Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Inc. — and follow along on social media for live updates.

Our team will be posting highlights, insights, and announcements all week long on @stage32 and @rbwalksintoabar on Instagram. I’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes moments and reflections from the panels and meetings I attend.

This week, whether you’re at the Fairmont or following from home, I encourage you to treat AFM as a learning opportunity. Watch how deals are made. Pay attention to what kinds of projects are generating buzz. Take notes on how producers and distributors talk about the films they’re excited about. Every piece of knowledge you gain now will help you later.

Final Words of Wisdom

For me, AFM has always represented possibility. It’s the one week each year where filmmakers from every corner of the world come together not just to talk about movies — but to make them happen.

It’s a place built on passion, collaboration, and the belief that great stories deserve to be told.

And after ten years as AFM’s Education Partner, I can tell you this: the people who find success here aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets or the most connections. They’re the ones who do the work, who show up prepared, and who lead with generosity and professionalism.

So wherever you are in your journey — whether you’re at AFM shaking hands or back home refining your pitch — remember this: every meeting, every conversation, every new connection is a brick in the foundation of your career.

Build it intentionally. Build it authentically. And most of all, keep showing up.

Here’s to 10 years of education, inspiration, and connection — and to the next 10 years of making the dream real.

Cheers,

RB
