Insider Intel: The Studio War & The Rise of Indies

I'll spare you the 394th Warner Bros. acquisition digest. I'm sure you've heard enough expert opinions. Instead, I want to take an optimistic view of the business and talk about what can really affect your day-to-day as an independent producer, creator, writer or content maker.

While big conglomerates play Russian dolls with M&As, we're seeing smaller platforms targeting audience niches…and that's what excites me. With Tubi exceeding 100 million monthly active users and Angel Studios surpassing 1.6 million subscribers, audiences are turning to alternative streamers.

As Michael Schulman, industry veteran and story analyst at Amazon, told our Writers' Room members last week: writers should take the path of least resistance. Countless producers are reporting success internationally, and we're seeing smaller-budget productions getting greenlit all around the world. Right now, buyers and financiers are finding success with projects that are contained and can be made for under $5M.

Just last week, I chatted with an Irish production company raising $75 million to shoot projects locally. And with Ireland having international co-production treaties with most of the main production hubs, there are more opportunities to seize than ever if you want to own your content.

My advice? Make projects that can attract talent. Indies are booming right now. This is the '90s all over again. Mini studios and niche buyers are popping up everywhere. But with technology and tax incentives empowering indie filmmakers, I urge all creatives not to censor themselves or asking anyone for permission. The future of Hollywood might no longer be in the hands of three companies.

Congratulations to Robert who signed with Evan Anglin, literary manager at Zero Gravity, after meeting through a Stage 32 consultation! He is a lifetime member of the Actors Studio, a former moderator there and coordinator of the writers/directors unit under the direction of Ernie Martin.

Robert has produced a number of plays and short films. The most notable, a six month run of "Frankie and Johnny" was very well received and reviewed. He has also written a number of screenplays on controversial subjects including "Follow the Prophet", which premiered at the 2009 Santa Barbara Film Festival.
